My mom and my six year old niece Rylee were driving home from getting a snow cone the other day when Rylee says to mom, "Granny, who's this Oprah woman?" Mom began to explain to her that she has a TV show and she was born in Mississippi. Rylee quickly pipes in and says, "and shes brown." To which my mom says, "Yes shes brown." "There are a lot of brown people in Mississippi." Rylee stated. "Yes there are." Mom said. Then Rylee said, "Yeah, and some of them are Hispanic and Chinese."
People often characterize themselves or others as Black or White, it doesnt bother me. Having taught art for years I have to stay true to color. I teach my students that we are all shades of brown. That no one is truly black or white. Kudos to Rylee for seeing that at such an early age.
